I recently read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz and realized that these principles are essentially the rules to achieving personal freedom eventually. You will need to put in a lot of time and effort if you want to fine-tune your habits and turn them into concrete practices.

The reason you’ll need time is because you’ll be trying to remove decades-old rules-ways of thought and communicating and responding that you've learned your entire life automatically. That won't happen overnight. And you might fail but don’t beat yourself up about it! Here’s what you need to learn from this book.

  • Always Communicate With Integrity: Always speak the truth. Say what you mean, then say what you're saying. Always think about what you’re saying and who you’re saying it about. Words are like weapons. Use them in constructive, not destructive ways.
  • Don’t Take Things Personally: How other people act has completely nothing to do with you. Remember, their words and acts show their own aspirations and their own realities. If you quit worrying about other people's acts and feelings, you won't be a target for undue pain anymore.
  • Never Make Assumptions: Be bold enough to raise questions which will reveal the truth. And speak your truth. Don't brush this over with sugary words. Simply talk to prevent misunderstanding, disappointment and drama. This one action alone will drastically change your life.
  • Be The Best Version of Yourself: Do the best you can in everything. The best you can do will change depending on the instances. For instance, when you're sick with stomach flu your best looks different than when you're feeling great. But you will eliminate self-judgment, self-abuse and regret when you do that. Makes sense, doesn't it? Just always try to be your best self!

The Bottomline

If you read and memories “The Four Agreements,” you will be working towards a life of unconditional love, gratitude, and respect for yourself and others. Isn’t that the best way to live? Think about it. And do it!
